I am a big proponent of going where students are, and using their interest to guide the content in the classroom. Students are currently on instagram. They think about their posts far more than the average person. Let's tap into that! I really love the idea of having students dive into their instagram feed or stories and pic something recent that resonates with them. Consider the following:
  1. Food post could be a recipe sketch. 
  2. Pictures of shopping hauls or hanging with friends could be a "story behind the picture" sketch.
  3. Pictures of a current book they are reading could be a sketch about the plot line, their reflections on the book as a whole, or even character development. 
  4. Landscape photos could be a sketch about the location of that spot, or what it's meaning is to you. 
  5. Outfit of the Day post could be a prompt to sketch about their current favorite clothes or outfits as well as their favorite shops.
Ultimately as stated in the book I feel like these sketches can become a part of a larger journal entry, sometimes you feel less vulnerable putting into a sketch than writing it all out word for word.

More recently I have come across a fabulous artist on instagram that wrote a book about drawing your day. Now technically she focuses on watercolor and line art, but I really like the idea of doing something similar to help increase your visual vocabulary.

Last summer I did a day in the life following a prompt from Karin Perry who also wrote a book about Sketchnoting in School. Scroll to the bottom of the post to see that sketchnote.

Here is a collection of some of my favorite; podcasts additionally at the bottom are some of the images about listening comprehension from the book at posted to at the bottom.
This is a great option for upper elementary and secondary students. You can search by keyword and content area. If you pay for the service you can also adjust the speed. Overall they are all short (usually around 5 minutes in length) NPR podcasts.
But Why is a science podcast where kids call or write in with questions and they search out an expert on the topic to answer the questions to the best of their ability.
Brains On! Is a science podcast for kids that is very similar to But Why. When you use a Podcast app you are able to adjust the speed from slow to fast.
Story Pirates is a group of actors, comedians, and musicians that adapt stories written by kids into sketch comedy and musical theater.

Here is a list of storytelling videos to have students practice listening comprehension with fictional stories. Pick and choose what you want students to focus on. They could do a sketchnote on plot line, they could focus on character development, or mood & tone etc.
