Top Tips

Picture
  1. Create don't just consume. People want to hear what you are doing, how it works or doesn't work, what resources you have etc. Share those out as you tell your story.
  2. Connect and Network. Find people working on the same content, or project. Get inspired and questions answered. Follow #hashtags for the best results.
  3. Keep Using It. Don't try it once and give up, the usefulness is relative to how much you use it.
  4. Make your own hashtags? Categorize the learning for your classroom or school, and tell students, parents, administrators to follow along. #RockCreakLearns (for example)
  5. Ask yourself what is the purpose of going to social media, and think about your circles of personal vs, professional relationships. I went to twitter for professional development- I didn't have anyone to help flip my class and I found the twitter chat and it was a lifesaver! Over the years most of my content has become professional but for a long time facebook has predominately been just friends and family and only in my personal circle. Whereas Twitter and Instagram has become more professional. Pinterest is in the middle!

Twitter Speak

  • Twitter Handle (username with the @symbol in front) mine is @MrsCarterHLA
  • Hashtag: using a # in front of something to help categorize the tweet and have the right audience see it
  • DM: is Direct Message, you can only direct message people that are friends with you and you them
  • Retweet: quoting someone else's tweet and repeating it for your audience
  • Modified Tweet: quoting someone's tweet and adding your own comments
  • Twitter Chat: A specific time where people come to twitter to talk about a topic. There is  a moderator, and prepared questions. You follow a twitter chat by using the hashtag. Moderator asks a question with a Q1 format, when you respond you answer with a A1 for that question, you must always include the hashtag in your answer so other people can see the response in their thread. For example people that are interested in flipping their classroom can go to the #flipclass twitter chat every Monday at 5pm PST.
